It represents the biggest financial bursary currently available on an individual basis to Northern Ireland’s most talented and deserving young sports person.
The Dale Farm Sports Award is open to anyone between the ages of 16-23 taking part in all sports recognised by the Ulster Sports Trust, from gymnastics to table tennis, rugby to swimming, athletics to cricket and many more.
Individuals must demonstrate excellence within their sport and can be self-nominated or nominated by any third party. However, all nominations must be supported by a recommendation from the sport’s relevant governing body.
Coleraine Ice-skater, Jenna McCorkell was chosen as this years winner of the inaugural Dale Farm Sports Award and celebrated with British ice-skating great’s Torvill and Dean as she picked up her award.
21 year old Jenna has come back from injury last year to have a spectacular start to her 2007 skating campaign. She is the current British No.1, lifting the Ladies Senior title in January 2007 for the fourth time. Jenna has also qualified for the European championships which is a real feat as she was not even expected to compete in the event until next year due to her injury.
Dame Mary Peters DBE, President of the Ulster Sports Trust and an Olympic Champion, is very excited about the wealth of young sporting talent in Northern Ireland, “We had a particularly strong field of entrants to this year’s [Dale Farm] Sports Award and it was an extremely difficult decision to single out one recipient. We appreciate the time, money and energy that these young people dedicate to excellence in their sport and it is a pleasure to be able to support that commitment”.
