Dale Farm’s Barry Spence is Resource Management Champion

Barry Spence from Dale Farm’s Pennybridge Dairy in Ballymena has been voted ‘Resource Management Champion’ at the Sustainable Ireland Awards 2011.
Barry was presented with the award, sponsored by NWP Recycling, at a glittering ceremony at the Ramada Hotel in Belfast where the keynote speaker was Environment Minister Alex Attwood.

The award was for the individual who was an enthusiastic and committed exemplar of best practice in the field of resource management.

An independent panel of judges noted that Barry had implemented best practice resource management programmes, identified key environmental impacts, bench marked performance against similar manufacturing units, and set targets and management programmes.

He was also instrumental in encouraging the company to invest in natural gas boilers, water and electricity metering and other more efficient plant and equipment – all of which combined have seen significant reductions in resource use.
With a wary eye on continuing rising energy prices, Barry has already started exploring additional means of further reducing use by considering alternative energy sources such as CHP.

This was the sixth year of the Energy, Environmental & Waste Management awards, organised by the Hillsborough based publishers of Sustainable Ireland magazine, 4SquareMedia, to celebrate the contribution industry makes to the environment and to sustainability.
